Autumn Fair has released the latest episode of its Retail Makeover Mission, featuring the transformation of independent retailer OSO Boutique in Salisbury. The project is led by retail expert Deryane Tadd, founder of award-winning boutique The Dressing Room in St Albans and a member of the Retail Makeover Mission expert task team.
After receiving hundreds of applications from independent retailers across the UK, two businesses were selected for a full retail transformation delivered by Autumn Fair’s Retail Task Team. The initiative brings together leading retail specialists to help independent stores strengthen areas such as visual merchandising, branding, customer experience and buying strategy.
The new episode follows Deryane as she welcomes OSO Boutique owner Katie Gibbs to The Dressing Room for a behind-the-scenes mentoring experience. Drawing on more than 20 years of retail experience, Deryane shares practical advice within her own store, offering Katie insight into what makes a successful independent boutique, from improving store layout and merchandising to refining brand storytelling and customer engagement.
Katie said: “Working with Deryane taught me that even as a small business, you have to think and behave like a big brand. That applies to everything, from how your store looks and feels to how products are displayed and the journey customers take through the shop. Big brands invest a lot of time and money into getting that right, but there’s no reason independent retailers can’t keep those same principles front of mind. From a commercial perspective, really understanding your sales data is the cornerstone. Thinking with that ‘big brand’ mindset helps you approach the business much more strategically and, when you visit the store now, you can really see those learnings in action.”
Deryane added: “Retail is much more than simply selling products. It’s about creating a complete business that puts the customer at the heart of everything you do, while building a team and environment that supports growth and creativity. Everything we share in the toolkit comes from real-life experience – what works in practice, what builds consistency, and what helps independent retailers grow sustainably.”
Alongside the episode, Autumn Fair has released a free downloadable retail toolkit featuring Deryane’s guidance on building a thriving retail business, from intentional store layouts and strong teams to meaningful customer experiences and integrated digital channels.
Matthew Mein, event director of Autumn Fair, commented: “This project is about celebrating the passion and resilience of independent retailers. These businesses are the heart of our high streets and communities, and the Retail Makeover Mission shows what’s possible when expertise, creativity and determination come together.”
Autumn Fair takes place from September 6 to September 9 at NEC Birmingham.
