New research from Moonpig has revealed that a significant number of Brits are turning to AI to write their Father’s Day cards, driven by difficulty finding the right words for the occasion.

A study of 1,500 UK adults found that Brits are more likely to struggle with a Father’s Day message than a Mother’s Day one (11% versus 9%), with more than 55% admitting they find it difficult to find the right sentiment for their dad.

This “communication gap” is most prevalent among younger generations. Nearly one in four (24%) 18-24-year-olds admit they find writing a Father’s Day card a difficult task, compared with just 6% of those aged 55-plus. To overcome this, nearly half (49%) of 25-34-year-olds say they have already used AI tools to help draft or write their Father’s Day messages.

The research also uncovered a significant regional divide in AI use for drafting Father’s Day messages, with Glasgow (56%), Belfast (43%), Leeds (43%), Birmingham (36%), and London (28%) among the leading areas.

In addition, the data highlights a clear gender divide in how we communicate with our fathers. Men are significantly more likely to struggle with the message, with 13% of men finding it difficult to write a Father’s Day card compared with 9% of women. Consequently, men are also more likely to turn to AI for help, with 24% of men using digital tools to find the right words, compared with 21% of women.

Moonpig said this hesitation is often rooted in a broader lack of communication confidence, as 46% of the UK population admit they are held back from writing important messages by a fear of saying the wrong thing.

For a growing number of people, using AI is becoming a recurring habit to bridge this gap, with 11% of respondents now using digital tools multiple times to ensure they find the right sentiment for Father’s Day.

Georgie Smallwood, chief product and technology officer at Moonpig, said: ”Every day at Moonpig, customers use our creative tools to help them write messages that really matter, expressing their care, support, or just to let someone know they’re loved. It really feels special that we are helping people to stay in touch and say the right thing at the right time, whether they’re writing from scratch or looking for a little digital inspiration.”
