Paper Starlights is celebrating its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of handmade design and a long-standing partnership with the skilled makers who produce its paper star lanterns in India.

The Derbyshire-based company began after founders Andy Jupp and Jules Cooper encountered paper star lanterns during Diwali and were captivated by the colour, light and sense of celebration they created.

Thirty years later, every Paper Starlight is still screen-printed and punched by hand using traditional techniques. Colours are layered by eye, tissue inserts create the distinctive stained-glass glow, and some designs feature more than 1,000 individually punched pinholes.

The anniversary has also been recognised by BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK, which recently featured Paper Starlights in a Member Spotlight looking at the story behind the brand and its 30-year relationship with its makers in India.

Alongside its presence in independent shops and Christmas markets across the UK, Paper Starlights is also developing larger creative installations. Its Light of Stars installation illuminated Bath Abbey from November 2024 to January 2025, with a new installation at Leicester Cathedral planned for this Christmas.
