Somerset-based walking stick specialist Classic Canes has been sold to one of its long-term suppliers, Gastrock of Germany. The Classic Canes name will pass to Gastrock on June 1 2025, after which the German family firm will supply Classic Canes customers around the world directly.
Gastrock is billed as the world’s leading manufacturer of wooden walking sticks and will also supply selected models from the rest of the renowned Classic Canes’ range.
In the meantime, all the UK stock has to be cleared and discounts of 50% or more are now available on all items. Classic Canes is especially famed for its fashionable patterned canes and folding sticks, and these are now available at significant discounts while stocks last. Also in the sale are orthopaedic walking sticks, formal canes, contemporary and traditional leather seat sticks, umbrellas, display stands, and small accessories such as rubber ferrules and wrist loops.

Classic Canes managing director Charlotte Gillan said: “After 42 years, we have very mixed feelings about saying goodbye to Classic Canes, as it’s been such an important part of our family life. We will especially miss all our fascinating customers around the world, many of whom have bought from us for decades. For logistical reasons and because, due to Brexit, taxes and duties would be payable on the stock if it was transported to the new owners in Germany (where they would also have the expense and inconvenience of relabelling it all), we therefore agreed to sell it off from our UK premises before the company changes hands in June.
“The initial phase of the clearance sale was very well supported with almost all wooden sticks having now sold out. However, we still have plenty of aluminium sticks and folding canes, orthopaedic sticks, seat sticks, umbrellas and accessories to clear, not to mention walking stick display stands. This is due to the much higher manufacturer’s minimum order quantities for these products, which means we have a higher stock holding in these categories. Discounts are now 50% or greater, with additional price breaks for larger quantities and further discounts for orders over £1,000 and over £5,000.
